Stories from Micklegate
Susan Major
Micklegate, the ‘great street’ of York, is a fascinating street, sweeping in an elegant curve from Micklegate Bar’s Royal entrance down to the Ouse Bridge. But how much do you know about those historic buildings that line the street?
Our latest project group have been investigating the origins of every building on Micklegate, who lived there and who was trading there from early times to the modern day. They've already uncovered many stories, some of which we'll be presenting at this talk.
How much do you know about well-known animals on Micklegate? These include a monkey, a parrot and a horse called Dobbin.
You'll hear about medieval murders, and secret liaisons at the Falcon Inn. Did you know there used to be a police family living at Micklegate Bar? There was also a pub there, where a beautiful Roman pavement was found in the early 19th century.
We'll be showing you how a house for the gentry changed into a chemical factory. And how one of our pubs housed meetings of railwaymen in the 1860s, concerned about very poor working conditions on the railway, a group which predated the NUR.
You can become a member of the History Group for £5 for 2025, which gives you reduced entry (£1) to talks. Non-members are also welcome, at a cost of £3 on the door.
Please note in 2025 we are offering online only membership for £5. This type of membership entitles the member to view recordings of the talks at home on a computer or tablet. The online member would receive the link automatically as soon as the recording is made, usually a week or so after the live talk. We record all the talks that we are allowed to by the speakers. Very occasionally a speaker does not wish to be recorded.
There are a small number of free parking spaces near Clements Hall. It is also easily accessible by buses stopping in Blossom Street (walk along Moss Street opposite the Everyman Cinema).
