Shadows in the Bricks: the old shops of South Bank in York
We're delighted to announce that our new book, Shadows in the Bricks: the old shops of South Bank in York, is out now.
We staged an exhibition about our researches into South Bank and its shops at the Winning Post in 2016. There were over 100 buildings used as shops and businesses in the area between Southlands Road and Campleshon Road, across to Finsbury Street, mostly now gone, but some still of course trading successfully.
We've drawn on much work already carried out by several local residents, who have fond memories, together with our own researches using directories, the census and the press over the last 100 years. Our research has highlighted the sense of community still alive in the area.
The book, which has 114 pp,101 photographs and a map, is available to buy price £7 on Bishy Rd at Pextons, Frankie and Johnny's Cookshop, the Winning Post and from the Trafalgar Bay on Nunnery Lane. If you wish to order this by post, please contact us onclemhallhistory@gmail.com for details and costs
Please note we're keen to enlarge upon the material we included in our book. Since publication we're already had more information, so follow this link to find out more.
