William Walker, 20 Victoria St, York (also at 4 Hawthorn Place, Price St, York).

William was a Roman Catholic who served in the Non-Combatant Corps at home and in France.

William Walker was born in Wakefield and his family moved to York, living at 20 Victoria Street (1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses). William married Alice Metcalfe in St. Clements Church in 1915. He was a Roman Catholic and this may have influenced his pacifism. William and his father worked as organ builders.

At the age of 32 William was exempted from Military Service by a Tribunal. He was assigned to the Non-Combatant Corps (1 Northern) on 23 March 1916. On the 30 April he departed for France with the Prince of Wales Own (West Yorkshire) Regiment. His Regimental Number was 26726 and he was in General Service in a non-combatant role.

William served in the Expeditionary Force in France from 30 April to 6 August 1916. He was discharged because he was sick suffering from debility and impetigo. He was moved to the army reserve class W on 1 November 1916.

William died at the age of 57 in York in 1942.
